What Is Arya Samaj Marriage?
Arya Samaj is a Hindu reform movement founded by Swami Dayananda Saraswati in 1875. Arya Samaj mandirs (temples) perform Vedic marriage ceremonies (vivah havan / saptapadi) without caste distinctions. The ceremony is recognised as a valid Hindu religious ceremony under the Hindu Marriage Act, 1955.
After the Arya Samaj ceremony, the couple registers the marriage at the Sub-Registrar's office under the Hindu Marriage Act, using the Arya Samaj marriage certificate as the proof of religious solemnisation. The result is a government-issued marriage certificate.
Arya Samaj marriage is popular for:
- Inter-caste Hindu couples (both Hindu, different castes) who want a religious ceremony without caste-based restrictions
- Couples whose families are opposed but who want a legally valid marriage quickly
- Couples who want a simple, affordable Vedic ceremony in addition to legal registration
Two-Stage Process
The couple appears at the Arya Samaj mandir with witnesses. The Arya Samaj pandit performs the Vedic vivah ceremony (havan, saptapadi). The Arya Samaj issues a Vivah Praman Patra (marriage certificate on Arya Samaj letterhead) on the same day.
Using the Arya Samaj certificate as proof of religious solemnisation, the couple applies for Hindu marriage registration at the Sub-Registrar's office, Pondicherry. The government issues the official marriage certificate, which is accepted by all courts, banks and embassies.
