Frequently Asked Questions
The New Regime is generally better if you have few deductions (HRA, 80C, 80D, home loan interest). If your deductions are large, the Old Regime may still save more tax at higher income levels. Under the Finance Act 2025, a salaried individual with taxable income up to Rs.12 lakh (roughly Rs.12.75 lakh gross, after the Rs.75,000 standard deduction) pays zero tax in the New Regime due to the enhanced Rs.60,000 rebate. Above that, compare carefully — large deductions (home loan interest, HRA, 80C) can tilt the balance toward the Old Regime.
Section 87A provides a tax rebate that makes tax payable nil up to a threshold. Under the Finance Act 2025, for FY 2025-26, the New Tax Regime rebate was raised to up to Rs.60,000, applicable where net taxable income does not exceed Rs.12 lakh — meaning a salaried individual pays no tax up to roughly Rs.12.75 lakh gross income after the standard deduction. For the Old Regime, the rebate remains Rs.12,500 for taxable income up to Rs.5 lakh.
