What is an IEC Code?
The Importer Exporter Code (IEC) is a 10-digit unique identification number issued by the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT), Ministry of Commerce & Industry. Since 2021, the IEC is linked to your PAN — your PAN itself serves as the IEC once activated on the DGFT portal.
IEC is mandatory before you can:
- Clear customs for imported goods
- Ship goods for export
- Open a Letter of Credit with a bank for trade finance
- Receive foreign currency payments for services (software, consulting)
- Register on export promotion portals (DGFT, APEDA, Spice Board)

Verify the application using Aadhaar OTP (for proprietors/directors) or Digital Signature Certificate. This authenticates the applicant's identity.
